Energy Efficient Fisheries (EEF) began as an effort to characterize energy use on small and medium commercial fishing vessels operating in the US state of Massachusetts and to pilot emerging energy efficiency and zero-emission propulsion technologies. Recognizing the challenging capital environment facing commercial fisheries in an already low-margin sector, work is now expanding to connect vessel owners looking to finance energy efficiency projects with providers of low-cost capital. This presentation will discuss the energy efficiency and emissions reduction state of play in US commercial fisheries and early adopter support for financing and system design in this hard-to-abate sector of the food economy.
