The maritime industry has made remarkable strides in lithium-ion battery safety, and there are strong reasons to be optimistic about the future. A standout example is the DIU LOC-NESS program, in which the US navy is deploying Siemens Energy’s commercial lithium-ion battery technology in a combatant application – without any modifications to the core technology. This program demonstrates the growing confidence in the safety, reliability and robustness of commercial battery systems, even in the most demanding environments. This presentation will highlight the LOC-NESS program and discuss the key trends driving the positive momentum in maritime batteries.
